Athenahealth Introduces Tool to Connect Patient Health Records With Anthropic’s Claude

Electronic health record company athenahealth has rolled out a new server solution that allows patients to connect their personal health data with external artificial intelligence assistants, starting with Anthropic’s Claude. The tool, known as athenaPatient MCP, utilizes the Model Context Protocol to bridge the company’s athenaOne platform with external generative AI models.

How the athenaPatient MCP Tool Functions

According to athenahealth executives, the integration requires patients to authenticate their identity using their patient portal credentials. Patients retain full control over which information is accessed, and credentials are not shared directly with the AI assistant. Paul Brient, chief product and operations officer at athenahealth, stated that the data remains encrypted during transit and that users can revoke permissions at any point.

With explicit user approval, Claude can review clinical details such as lab results, medications, vital signs, health conditions, diagnostic reports, and care plans. The objective is to provide individuals with personalized insights regarding their personal medical information, moving beyond general or generic AI responses.

Industry Context and Privacy Considerations

The launch arrives as more individuals turn to conversational technology for health-related inquiries. Data from a Pew Research Center survey cited by athenahealth indicates that more than a third of U.S. adults have utilized AI assistants to look up symptoms or interpret diagnoses.

Company representatives noted that access to athenaPatient MCP will be restricted to AI systems that do not utilize patient information for model training purposes. Furthermore, executives emphasized that the architecture is designed to accommodate multiple AI models over time rather than remaining exclusive to a single provider, given the rapid evolution of the technology sector.

Potential Impacts on Patient and Clinician Interactions

While industry analysts note that integrating generative AI into healthcare workflows presents ongoing governance and data security challenges, proponents argue that better-informed patients may experience more productive discussions with their care teams. Brient added that the software aims to help individuals process complex medical information received during visits without imposing additional administrative burdens on clinical staff.
