Zocdoc Opens Infrastructure to AI Agents and Partners with Instinct for Healthcare Scheduling
As a growing number of patients turn to artificial intelligence tools to manage their medical needs, appointment scheduling platform Zocdoc has announced it is opening its healthcare access infrastructure to AI agents. Reported by Fierce Healthcare, the initiative launched on October 28 to allow external agents to connect patients with care providers through Model Context Protocol servers, deep links, and other channels.
Expanding AI Integration in Healthcare Navigation
According to Zocdoc Chief Strategy Officer Alex Doyne, traffic originating from AI agents on the platform has at least doubled roughly every three weeks since July. Doyne noted that while AI agents can help individuals navigate care options and take action on their behalf, their effectiveness depends entirely on the reliability of the systems they access. By connecting agents to Zocdoc’s infrastructure, the company aims to ensure that bookings are directed to the correct providers.
Zocdoc reports having more than 175 scheduling integrations, encompassing over 10,000 insurance plans and 200,000 verified providers within its network. Doyne pointed out that healthcare navigation remains particularly challenging for artificial intelligence because online medical information is often fragmented, outdated, or inaccurate. Providing agents with verified provider details, accurate availability, and integrated calendar functionality is intended to prevent scheduling errors that could impact patient access to care.
New Partnership and Safety Guidelines
Alongside the infrastructure opening, Zocdoc announced a partnership with AI personal assistant Instinct. Ben Schwerin, chief business officer at Instinct, stated in a press release that the integration is designed to help users navigate complex healthcare tasks, allowing individuals to find vetted providers, verify insurance benefits, and book appointments via simple text interactions.
Instinct joins Zocdoc’s Care Access Network, which includes other major platforms such as Google Gemini, Amazon Health AI, Yelp, and Healthgrades. To govern these interactions, Zocdoc has established operational guidelines requiring agents to register, identify themselves, obtain explicit patient consent before booking, and protect both patient and provider data.
Broader Infrastructure Strategy
This technological expansion follows Zocdoc’s recent acquisition of Sohar Health, marking the nearly 20-year-old company’s first acquisition. Sohar Health specializes in simplifying insurance workflows through APIs that automate insurance discovery, eligibility and benefits verification, network status checks, and cost estimates. Through these developments, Zocdoc is positioning itself as foundational healthcare access infrastructure rather than solely an appointment-booking marketplace.
