Intuitive Shares Fall After Adjusting 2026 Procedural Growth Outlook
Robotic surgery giant Intuitive experienced a notable share price drop following the release of its third-quarter financial results, despite reporting strong year-over-year revenue growth. The company revealed a tempered outlook for its robotic surgery procedural growth for 2026, causing investors to reevaluate market demand amid evolving economic and regional headwinds.
Strong Third-Quarter Financial Performance
According to data compiled by the London Stock Exchange Group and cited by Reuters, Intuitive reported quarterly revenues reaching just over $3 billion, marking a 22% increase compared to the same period in the previous year. This performance outperformed consensus analyst estimates of $2.91 billion, translating to $3 per diluted share.
The company stated that the majority of its third-quarter revenue came from its instruments and accessories segment at nearly $1.8 billion. This was followed by $769.1 million generated from systems and $482.2 million from services, with each operational segment outpacing its performance from both the second quarter and the previous year.
Procedural Growth and System Placements
Worldwide surgical procedures performed using Intuitive’s da Vinci and Ion robotic systems grew by approximately 15% year-over-year during the third quarter. The company reported placing 546 da Vinci robots during the quarter, which included 315 units of the newer da Vinci 5 system. Chief Executive Officer Dave Rosa noted that customers utilized the company’s multi-port, single-port, and Ion platforms to complete an average of more than 10,000 procedures per day throughout the quarter.
Despite the strong placement numbers, Intuitive adjusted its forecast for global robotic surgery procedure growth in 2026. The company now anticipates growth to land at a midpoint range of 14% to 15%, representing a shift from its previously outlined projection of 13.5% to 15.5%.
Market Headwinds and Regulatory Milestones
Explaining the revised guidance during an earnings call, Intuitive’s head of investor relations, Dan Connally, pointed to several influencing factors. These include potential shifts in patient behavior across the United States linked to Affordable Care Act premium subsidies, alongside fluctuating tender volumes and competitive intensity within the Chinese market.
Market reaction was immediate following the announcement after market close on October 20. Shares listed on the Nasdaq stock exchange dropped by over 8%, moving from a previous value of $438 to around $402 per share at market open on October 21.
Meanwhile, the company continues to achieve key regulatory milestones. The da Vinci 5 received clearance from the US Food and Drug Administration in March 2024, and subsequently secured a European CE mark in September 2026 for use in cardiac procedures.
Broader Industry Outlook
While Intuitive adjusted its specific growth projections, independent analysis from GlobalData indicates continued expansion across the wider robotic surgery sector. The global market is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 6.3%, reaching an estimated valuation of $23.6 billion by 2035, up from $12.8 billion in 2025. Furthermore, market modeling from the same firm indicated that Intuitive held a 48.8% share of the United States robotic surgical systems market in 2025.
